14.2 million meal-sized portions of salmon are exported from Norway.
Every single day. All year round. Figures like that are enough to make you dizzy,
but they clearly show how important marine industries are for our country.

Several of the world’s largest and most important aquaculture companies are headquartered in Bergen, which means that the seafood industry along the entire Norwegian coast and around the world is controlled from here. And as home to more than a thousand marine scientists, Bergen is a globally leading centre of expertise on all matters relating to the sea. Bergen also has some of the world’s strongest marine resource management environments. All these provide fertile ground in which companies large and small can flourish; companies characterised by entrepreneurship, a thirst for innovation and high-tech expertise.

For more and more people, the vision of a five-fold increase in Norwegian seafood exports in the years to 2050 is not nearly ambitious enough. Today, a mere 2 per cent of the world’s food supply comes from the sea. Norway is at the very forefront of the search for solutions to how we can farm the sea in a sustainable fashion.

The seafood industry faces numerous challenges, such as sea lice and escaped farmed salmon. This is why our research communities are so important, and why it is so important that we make use of our world-class technological expertise from shipping, oil and gas to find new solutions. This requires close collaboration between the industry, research establishments, regulatory bodies and the political authorities.

In Bergen, there are major plans to co-locate the university’s marine research entities, the Institute for Marine Research and the Directorate of Fisheries. All our marine communities applaud the plans, as do we at the Bergen Chamber of Commerce and Industry! Co-location will further enhance our marine exports, innovation, competence and our contribution to sustainable food production from the sea to the world’s growing population.

The Bergen Chamber of Commerce and Industry thinks it is high time the people of Bergen and Hordaland County turn their gaze to the sea once again. We hope that this magazine will highlight some of the riches on offer and that you will give your support to all those who wish to make Bergen the seafood capital of the future.
